Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord grants wisdom! From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
What’s your favorite 90’s cartoon movie? For me, it’s hands down Aladdin. I’ll be the first to admit that I have not seen the live action yet though. I hear Will Smith did a great job, but man, I just don’t know that I can forget the voice of Robin Williams as the genie.
Anyway, back on track. The main character is a young man named Aladdin who through a series of events finds himself in the presence of a magic genie who is there to grant him three wishes. Anything Aladdin can dream of, anything he wishes, the genie will make it come true, with a few caveats. But none the less, the charismatic genie’s entire purpose is to grant these wishes.
Now, God is not a genie and he is not at our beck and call like this scenario. But there is a similarity here.
When our heart’s wish is for wisdom, God is here to make that desire come true. Like the genie, He has a unique power to bring it to pass in a way that is supernatural and unattainable any other way. And just like the genie, there is a caveat. God isn’t going to give you wisdom just because you think it would be a good thing to have. No, if you’ll re-read the previous five verses, you’ll see eight things a person meeting the condition of wisdom does:
Listen to what I say
Treasure My commands
Turn your ears to wisdom
Concentrate on understanding
Cry out for insight
Ask for understanding
Search for them
Seek them
What do these eight things all have in common? Each of them reveal a person who has placed a proactive priority on wisdom. They reveal the heart of a person who has realized that wisdom is the principle thing and that they must get it at all costs. But they haven’t stopped there. The most important revelation they have received is that true wisdom can’t be found just anywhere. True, infallible, perfect wisdom is found in God and Him alone.
When we realize that God is the well we draw this wisdom from, we will begin placing a proactive priority on attaining it by seeking His face and digging into His Word. And do you know what His response will be? He will look at each of us and say, “Wisdom granted!”
PRAYER
Father, I recognize you as the source of true wisdom. From your mouth come knowledge and understanding. I’m listening for your voice and I’ll treasure your words. My ears are tuned in for your wisdom and understanding. I need insight. So today, I ask you for wisdom and understanding. As I search and seek it out, I thank you for granting me your supernatural wisdom!
